      Nov. 7, 2011 - SR 520 reopens after a weekend of construction

SEATTLE – Both directions of State Route 520 reopened on-time this morning after crews worked half the weekend to install massive concrete girders in Medina for a future lidded overpass and to create a wider median work zone on the Eastside.

Westbound drivers will notice some changes this morning. Carpools and vanpools will be required to merge into general traffic lanes a half-mile farther east than before. An expanded median work zone also shifts westbound traffic slightly to the right approaching 84th Avenue Northeast. Drivers also will travel beneath an ever-growing lid at Evergreen Point Road.

ABERDEEN – There’s a new doorway at the State Route 520 Pontoon Construction Project site – a huge, 30-foot-tall portal designed to keep the waters of Grays Harbor at bay until next spring when the first batch of concrete pontoons is ready to float out.

      E-mail update - Dec. 28, 2011

Tolling begins 5 a.m. Thursday on the SR 520 bridge (Dec. 29)

The first tolls on the SR 520 floating bridge will be charged at 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29. If you have not already set up your Good To Go! tolling account, now is the time to do it. Buy your pass, activate it online or by calling a customer service representative to get the cheapest toll rate, and install it on your vehicle. Find out which option is best and answers to our top 10 tolling questions.

Changing traffic patterns once tolling begins on SR 520
Across the Puget Sound region, traffic patterns are expected to shift as drivers choose alternate routes. That means additional congestion is expected on I-90 and SR 522, and interstates 405 and 5 near interchanges. Our blog about traffic patterns explains what travel speeds are expected on alternate routes in coming months.

Reminder: 520 bridge closing Wednesday night, Thursday morning
Late night drivers will need to plan ahead for delays and closures on the SR 520 floating bridge and highway the night of Wednesday, Dec. 28, and into the early morning hours Thursday, Dec. 29. Crews will close all eastbound SR 520 lanes and delay westbound drivers by up to 20 minutes as they work to uncover the last handful of tolling signs from I-5 to Bellevue.
Eastbound SR 520: Ramps at Montlake Boulevard and Lake Washington Boulevard close at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, and all SR 520 eastbound lanes close at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, from Interstate 5 to just west of Bellevue Way. All ramps from I-5 to eastbound SR 520 also will close. All lanes and ramps reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29.
Westbound SR 520: The Washington State Patrol will conduct rolling slowdowns on westbound SR 520 between the east side of the floating bridge and Montlake Boulevard from 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, while crews continue to work on toll signs. A rolling slowdown involves State Patrol vehicles traveling at a slow speed, holding back traffic and creating a safe temporary gap for construction crews down the highway. Drivers should plan for delays of up to 20 minutes.

Taking a bus once tolling starts?

Once tolling starts, King County Metro Transit expects to see new riders on buses, and the park and ride lots along SR 520 could fill up earlier in the morning. During peak commute times, a Metro or Sound Transit bus crosses the bridge every two minutes, so there is plenty of service if you can adjust your travel times even by just a few minutes. Or, try a less-crowded park and ride with similar service. If scheduled bus service doesn’t meet your needs, you can find a seat in an existing vanpool or form your own. Visit Metro’s website for information and tips on all the cross-lake service and options.

Our favorite photos of 2011: Looking back at a busy year for SR 520 construction

We have a lot of great photos and videos you can check out online that show just how busy a year we’ve had with highway construction on the Eastside and pontoon work in Aberdeen. Crews show excavation, building forms, tying rebar, installing girders and pouring concrete isn’t easy. This spring, watch for the start of construction of a new floating bridge on Lake Washington.
